Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecological
Investigations and Assessments

Our ecological services are diverse in focus and scale, ranging from preparation of Adaptive Response Management Plans for endangered flora and fauna; Assessment and monitoring of marine biodiversity; and Environmental Impact Assessment and recommendations for management of Marine Parks.

Aquatic Ecological services include:

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plans (EMP)
  • Coral reef ecology and marine biodiversity investigations and assessments
  • Estuarine and mangrove assessments
  • Groundwater Dependant Ecosystem (GDE) investigations
  • Aquatic monitoring, sampling techniques, statistical analysis
  • Seagrass bed investigations and assessments
  • Marine water and sediment quality assessments

C&R Consulting have a complete and thorough understanding of aquatic ecology that allow them to assess an aquatic environment, design the best possible sampling programme for the required ecological information, realistically interpret the results, and provide innovative remediation and / or management solutions. C&R have a comprehensive understanding of current issues, from the connectivity within and between marine and freshwater habitats, to issues of climate change. Additionally, C&R Consulting offers a variety of possibilities for testing the physical and chemical characteristics that affect aquatic ecosystems. The skills C&R offers include sampling design development, well-designed field studies, underwater video and other data collection techniques, water resource assessments, commercial diving and boat handling qualifications, statistical data analysis and interpretation, writing and graphical analysis to publication quality, and water management and conservation expertise.

Terrestrial Ecological services include:

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plans (EMP)
  • Property Maps of Assessable Vegetation (PMAV)
  • Wildlife Corridor Studies and Landscape Connectivity Investigations
  • 'Natural Value' Assessment
  • Terrain and Habitat Evaluation
  • Flora and Fauna Studies
  • Environmental Monitoring of Natural Systems
  • Vegetation and Landscape Management Plans
  • Integrated Pest Management Plans
  • Weed Assessments and Control Plans

Property Maps of Assessable Vegetation (PMAV)

Property Maps of Assessable Vegetation (PMAV) are required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for assessment of Development Applications where clearing of vegetation is required. This is to ensure that there will be no detrimental impact to endemic, locally rare or nationally or internationally endangered flora or fauna.

Weed control

Weed control can become costly and time-consuming, therefore Weed Assessments and Management Plans of aquatic, terrestrial, and exotic weeds can play an integral role in the maintenance of a healthy functioning ecosystem and often helps improve local biodiversity.

Whether an assessment of flora and/or fauna is required for a proposed or existing development, a Protected Area or for re-channelisation of a river, C&R Consulting recognises a fundamental understanding of the links between ecosystem health, function and ecology. Our skilled team of Botanists, (including a Regional Ecosystem specialist), Geomorphologists, Ecologists and GIS experts have many years experience working in the field and in the analysis and interpretation of data, and can apply this expertise to the formulation of Ecologically Sustainable Management Plans.

Examples of past projects include; Formation of rehabilitation strategies for removal of Chinee Apple infestations at James Cook University; Aquatic Weed Harvesting in Ross River; and Ross Island Barracks; Environmental Impacts on mangroves, sea grasses, and salt marsh vegetation; Study of the ecological values of a wastewater treatment plant on Magnetic Island and recommendations for future management options.
