Contaminated Sites and Soil Treatment

Contaminated Sites and Soil Treatment in tropical/sub tropical areas are a specialisation of C&R Consulting. C&R provide Acid Sulphate Soil (ASS) and Potential Acid Sulphate Soil (PASS) investigations and risk assessments, dispersive and erodible soils analyses, landfill and mine site solutions, mineralogical and hydrogeochemical investigations and they can offer realistic remediation solutions often using local materials only. C&R have many years experience working with various soil types and fully recognise and understand all aspects of soil management and soil properties. C&R Consulting are considered Australia's leading experts on the properties of swelling clays and soil dispersivity.

Dispersive and Erodible soils are common throughout tropical regimes, and their properties are often compounded by the strongly seasonal and unpredictable nature of the Australian climate. These soils have the potential to lead to undermining of foundations and drains, and are the dominant cause of slope failure. Inability to recognise the dispersive and erosive properties of these soils in the early stages of any development leads to disruption and increased costs during the construction period, often continuing into the maintenance and operational periods of a project. Simple, inexpensive soil assessments can detect the mechanical, mineralogical and geochemical properties of these soils, and evaluations can then provide correct, unambiguous information that is relevant to low cost remediation.

Acid Sulphate Soils (ASS) are widely distributed across Australia. Generally associated with mining operations or recently deposited marine sediments, they are harmful to biological systems, may lead to elevated metals levels in solution, and cause extensive damage to artificial structures, including foundations, drains and slabs. The management of acidic sulphide material is critically important to both the mining industry and development sites in the tropical / sub-tropical coastal zone. Due to the reactive nature of sulphides it is essential that the identification and assessment of acidic, or potentially acidic material, be carried out rapidly and accurately preferably in the field. C&R Consulting has extensive experience analysing the effects and potential impacts of sulphide-rich material, including catchment impacts of acidity and contaminant loadings and Acid Mine Drainage.

C&R Consulting fully understand soil properties including ASS, dispersivity, saturation, permeability and chemical properties, and can interpret them in real field contexts. We offer cost effective, reliable and informed solutions to all problems relating to soil type, in any situation, and also provide essential monitoring services to ascertain remediation success.

Contaminated sites can be a major cost inhibitor to any development proposal. C&R Consulting can identify these sites, provide full hydrogeochemical, soil mineralogical and contaminant migration assessments, the ability to offer innovative site-specific management and low cost remediation solutions. C&R are also recognised by the EPA as qualified to sign off on contaminated sites.

Examples of past projects include: Decontamination and in-situ bioremediation of contaminated soils for a large residential development; Investigation into heavy metals and water quality at a landfill site adjacent to an airport; Innovative strategies based on detailed chemical evaluation of contaminated areas adjacent to a creek for Urban Renewal and Metals mobility Investigation at a spoil site adjacent to a RAMSAR listed wetland.
